President Bush Signs Charity Provisions Into Law (08/06) President Bush recently signed the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which included 7 major provisions intended to encourage charitable giving and 17 key provisions written to crack down on abuses by charities or donors. It did not include a provision allowing people who do not itemize deductions to write off a portion of their charitable donations. Giving USA 2006 (0606) Coming on Strong is a recent article from The Chronicle of Philanthropy, summarizing the findings of Giving USA 2006. The main finding is that gifts in 2005 nearly matched the all-time high of 2000 ($260.5 billion). According to Giving USA 2006, last year saw a $15 billion increase in donations over 2004. When disaster gifts are excluded, donations were about even with 2004. The article discusses a number of key highlights from the report, including the decline in bequests, new fundraising approaches and online giving. Amazon.com Names Nonprofit Innovation Award Winner The winner of the 2005 Amazon.com Nonprofit Innovation Award is DonorsChoose. The award, created in partnership with the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation, went to the organization receiving the most online donations during the contest period. DonorsChoose generated more than $790,000, which was matched by Amazon.com, bringing its total earnings to more than $1.5 million. The other nine finalists kept the monies they raised during the competition.
New Illinois Charitable Database (11/05) The Office of the Attorney General recently launched an online database of all nonprofits registered in Illinois that are in compliance with the state's reporting requirements. The database includes contact information, Form AG990-IL, IRS 990 and 990-PF and audited financial statements. Nonprofits are urged to look up their organization to make sure the information listed is complete and correct.
Online Research Tool Free to Nonprofits (10/05) QuestionPro, a leader in online survey hosting and delivery since 2002, announced the QuestionPro Nonprofit Waiver Program. The program gives registered nonprofits one free account at the Professional license level free of charge for up to a year.
Blackbaud 2nd Annual State of the Nonprofit Industry Survey (10/05) Blackbaud recently released the third and final wave of results from its 2nd Annual State of the Nonprofit Industry Survey, which reveals that an increasing number of donors are giving restricted gifts to ensure that donaztions are funneled to specific causes or activities. The first wave of results from the survey focused on trends in fundraising and donor communications, both online and off.
